Paving with clinker bricks - this gives your driveway a special charm

A driveway made of clinker bricks has its very own character and is particularly characterized by its durability and robustness. However, planning and preparation takes a little more time here.

Clinker plasters offer a special charm

Just about everyone has paved surfaces made of concrete blocks, and wood can also be found on many properties. In the area of the entrance, however, wood is not advisable. Wood is not necessarily made to drive over it all the time. In addition, wood has to be maintained and treated regularly so that it can withstand the weather.

Clinker bricks are one of the most expensive types of plaster, but they leave their very own charm. While in the past these stones were often only available in shades of red, you can now choose from a larger product range from yellowish to almost black. It is only important that it also fits the house facade. After all, the overall picture is supposed to please without exception.

Large companies such as Röben and Wienerberger offer you a large number of different clinkers. In a local building material trade or a hardware store in your area, you certainly have the opportunity to take a closer look at the stones.

➤ Advantages of pavers

Especially in the entrance area or on terraces, pavers have decisive advantages. Clinker bricks are particularly hard fired and therefore also more weatherproof than wood and concrete blocks. They can absorb very little moisture, so they are guaranteed to be free of frost in winter.

Another advantage is the robustness, which of course is particularly positive in the area of vehicles. The only important thing here is the appropriate substructure for the load-bearing capacity.

➤ Lay the entrance with pavers - step by step instructions

Once you have received your pavers, you can start preparing the wing.

Before you get started, you should have all the materials and any necessary machinery ready. Once you get started, you want to pull through and not have to pause because of missing things.

From experience, I can say that laying paving stones can be very hard on the back, especially for inexperienced people. Not only laying, but also constantly transporting the stones with the cart is exhausting. Therefore, you should consider whether you are renting a pallet truck or even forklift for the short construction period. So you can move the stones to the right place as needed without lying on the couch with aching back in the evening. Companies such as cegema.de offer a large network for renting different construction vehicles throughout Germany. However, some construction companies on site often lend their vehicles to private individuals for a fee. Asking questions saves you a lot of time and a lot of effort.

So once you've organized everything, you're ready to go.

➥ Step 1: preparations

Before you can lay your new pavers, you have to take care of the substructure. Without this you will not have much fun with the clinker.

Depending on the nature of your system, you first have to excavate the area to be paved. A base layer must be placed under the paving stones so that the stones can later hold the load of the cars.

A slope of 2.5 percent must be planned for paving work. The slope must of course lead away from the house. The best thing to do is to tighten the cords that you can use to orient yourself at any time.

2Step 2: perform excavation

Now you can carry out the excavation. Depending on the area, either with a spade or faster with an excavator. Dig so deep that after excavation you are at least 20 centimeters below the finished height of the pavement. It is best to shake the excavated surface with a shaker or alternatively with a pounder. You can also hire vibrators in many hardware stores. Hornbach.de, for example, offers just such a service. However, this is not available in all cities. (Here is a list of all participating cities)

➥ Step 3: Apply base layer

So that the stones do not sink later and in the worst case burst, you must apply a base course. This should consist of a mixture of sand and gravel (grain size 0-32) and be at least 10 to 30 centimeters high. This must also be shaken again afterwards so that everything remains stable. Remember the slope here too.

➥ Step 4: Apply bedding material

After the base course is finished, a so-called bedding material is applied. The clinker is then laid in this “bed”. The bedding material usually consists of crushed sand or grit. Distribute this mass evenly over the area to be paved and remove this area with a peel plate. The better you do the preparation, the easier it will be to lay afterwards. Then you just have to put it on and you're done.

5 Step 5: Lay the clinker plaster

Now comes the most beautiful part - finally you can see results. How you lay the pavers depends entirely on your wishes and ideas. At abs-klinker.de you will find an overview with six different laying patterns. Some are fairly easy and quick to install, others a little more complex. You decide. The clinker is laid accordingly and tapped lightly with a rubber hammer.

➥ Step 6: Compact the clinker plaster

So that the clinker bricks also have a firm hold afterwards, they must be compacted at the end. Gravel is best suited for this. This is spread across the area and then swept into the joints with a broom. Finally, add water and let it drench.
